Today the corner shows «1 / 4» and a click on the photo only moves forward — there is no way back. Two options, both of which also fix the way back:
Counter top-left; any click advances one photo and wraps around. Going back means going all the way round.
The «1 / 4» stays. Two hairline chevrons sit inside the photo edges, visible but quiet; hover makes them solid. A plain click still advances.
No counter, no arrows — dots under the photo show how many and where you are. On a computer the dots are clickable, so the way back is a click on a dot; a click on the photo still advances.
Today each colour sits in a framed box on a white backdrop. Two lighter options — in every one the current colour is present and marked, and the others open their product page:

Framed thumbnails on an off-white box; the current colour carries the dark frame.

The photo masked to a circle with a hairline outline — no backdrop box. Current colour gets the solid outline. Same footprint as today.

No circle, no frame — just the garment small. The only permanent mark is a short underline beneath the current colour.
Nothing written under the miniatures. Three ways to reveal the name, shown here on the bare style — each works with either style from section 2:

Hover (or touch-hold) fades the colour name in under that miniature. Quiet, but touch screens have no hover — on a phone the name only shows after the tap.

The «color» line always names the selected colour, and previews on hover. Miniatures stay perfectly clean, and phones get the name for free — tapping selects, the line updates.

Both at once: hover names the miniature you point at, the line names the one selected. This is the full recommendation.
The colour row only shows on products that are linked into a Colorway group — and today almost none are. In the admin: open the product → Classification tab → Colorway group, link the sister colours, and give each product its colour name (e.g. «black yarn», «deep blue yarn») — that name is exactly what the hover and the «color» line show. The steps are described in the onboarding guide, chapter 6 · Products. The four sweatshirts used on this page are the natural first family to link.
